On July 29, Zhonghao Chenguang Research Institute of Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. and the Zhejiang Research Institute of Chemical Industry announced their collaboration in developing a technology that scales up HFC-23 conversion using engineering methods. The technology has already been applied in China for the first time, resulting in the construction of the first facility for large-scale operations. The technology is expected to spur the advancement of technologies aimed at curbing emissions produced by HFC-23 in the fluorine chemical industry, alleviate carbon emission pressure, and promote environmentally friendly and sustainable development.

Presently, HFC-23 is primarily generated as a byproduct during the production of HCFC-22. With a global warming potential 14,800 times higher than carbon dioxide, HFC-23 stands as one of the most potent greenhouse gases. Previously, the common practice for its disposal involved high-temperature incineration. Reducing carbon emissions generated by HFC-23 draws significant international attention.

The successful implementation of this project not only enables China to fulfill its obligations under international agreements like the Kigali Amendment but also promotes the sustainable reduction of HFC-23 emissions while transforming them into valuable economic benefits. This achievement significantly mitigates emission risks and regulatory pressures, providing robust support for the country's dual carbon goals.
